Making Wishes

Someone told Eiji once that if you wish really hard then your wish will come true.
For twenty long, painful days, Kikumaru Eiji wishes really hard.
On the twenty-first day, Oishi Shuuichiro is released from the hospital after nearly three weeks in a coma caused by a car accident.
Eiji is the first person he sees when his family escorts him home. His best friend and other half wraps his arms tightly around him, eyes shut fiercely against tears.
I’m okay, Oishi tries to reassure him. Other than his coma, he has suffered nothing but a sprained wrist and a lot of cuts and bruises. I’ll heal.
Oishi’s family has had their moment in the hospital and now they leave the two boys to their privacy.
Oh god Oishi I was so scared. Eiji’s voice is muffled and shaky. He won’t let go of the other boy. I was so scared.
Oishi strokes Eiji’s hair soothingly, heart turning at the sound of Eiji’s pain. I’m okay, he says. I’m fine. Don’t be scared. I’m here.
Eiji’s shoulders heave in a sob and he lifts his face from Oishi’s shoulder, wide eyes wet with tears. Oishi, he says, in a way that makes Oishi want to cry too. I thought you were going to die.
And then the tears are falling, flowing freely from those blue windows of pain.
I wished so hard.
Eiji clutches Oishi even closer, burying his face into Oishi’s shoulder as he is wracked with sobs.
I wished so hard.
And I prayed and pleaded and wished so hard because I don’t know what I’d do if you died!
Please don’t ever go away again.
He draws in long, shuddering breaths, as he slowly loosens his grip and stares into Oishi’s eyes again.
I missed you.
And Oishi holds him close, in that familiar warmth, and doesn’t wince at the new bruises. I know, he says. I know.
