This Time

When Syuusuke suggested a trip to the beach for just the three of them—“We haven’t been spending any time together lately,” accompanied with that small, wistful frown—Yuuta immediately asserted that he didn’t have any time; he had a lot of schoolwork and tennis practice and it just wasn’t possible, sorry. Unfortunately for him, Yumiko took up Syuusuke’s cause, declaring the outing a wonderful idea as she’d been missing her little brothers recently and giving Yuuta that look that promised hell for him if he tried to get out of it with his usual excuses.

Yuuta might not have wanted to spend a day in enforced company with Syuusuke, but he wanted far less to face Yumiko's wrath. She could be a force of nature behind her sweet smiles and dalliance in magic and fortune telling. “Sounds like fun,” he lied, shoulders slumping as he glanced warily at Syuusuke’s beaming face. “When should we go?”

“Saa, how about this Sunday?” suggested Syuusuke brightly. “There are no practices for Seigaku and I’m sure Mizuki-san would let you go for a day out with your family.” His eyes had narrowed when speaking Mizuki’s name and Yuuta could tell the honorific was attached out of a deceptive politeness. He tensed and snapped out shortly,

“Sunday’s fine.”

He had never quite understood why his brother hated Mizuki so much—well, yes, about the Super Rising and potential damage to his wrist but… Yuuta mentally shook his head. There was no understanding Syuusuke; sometimes he just made up his mind about things. He was frustratingly, unreasonably stubborn at times; too often, was Yuuta's private opinion.

It was a trait that ran in the family, he supposed, glancing from one older sibling to the other as they made plans. One of the similarities among a startling number… Even the way they sat spoke volumes: Yumiko elegant in an armchair, legs crossed as she leaned forward and ticked off an assortment of things they would have to bring on her fingers, and Syuusuke perched gracefully on the arm of the loveseat, nodding and smiling and looking genuinely happy in a way Yuuta hadn’t seen in a long time.

He looked away. He was the odd one out, wasn’t he? Sprawled across the loveseat haphazardly, sullen and never able to summon up a sweet smile whenever the situation called for it. He was tired of never being as good as them. He knew he worked hard and he knew he’d developed his own style of tennis and life—he wasn’t chasing after either of them anymore, especially not Syuusuke—but sometimes moments like these reminded him with a pang just how different he was.

It was why he didn’t like coming home often.

“Ne, Yuuta.” Syuusuke reached down a hand and ruffled his hair affectionately.

Yuuta batted it away irritably. “What?”

“Does leaving at nine sound good to you? We would arrive by ten and can spend most of the day there and come home after dinner.”

He shrugged. “Whatever.”

“Yuuta,” Yumiko said and Yuuta looked up when he heard the sharpness under her pleasant tone. Syuusuke had gotten up from his seat on the side of the chair and was hunting down paper and a pen to write down the list. From the careless way he moved and the look in Yumiko’s eyes, Yuuta knew.

“That’s fine,” he said and winced at his brusque tone. “Sounds like fun,” he added uncomfortably.

Almost imperceptibly, the tension eased out of Syuusuke, and the line of his shoulders shifted as he seated himself at table to write. Yuuta watched him, ignoring Yumiko’s fond look at the both of them, and hated himself for both hurting his brother and feeling bad about it. What was it that he wanted?

Sunday came and he still didn’t know. Why should he though? Fourteen years and he hadn’t figured out; it was unlikely another fourteen years would help him in that respect. Syuusuke was Syuusuke, who was clearly delighted at the outing, happily loading Yumiko’s car with snacks and beach gear. Yuuta helped, subdued, and the atmosphere was almost easy between the three of them as it hadn’t been in a long time.

“Well, let’s go!” Yumiko ushered her brothers into the car and there was only a moment’s hesitation before Syuusuke let Yuuta slide into the backseat and settled himself into the passenger’s side.

A year ago, Yuuta thought as Yumiko started the engine, Syuusuke would have been back here with him, invading his personal space and making all sorts of uncomfortable comments. “Today will be fun,” he said, almost sheepishly. Things had changed in a year.

The startled, blinding smile Syuusuke flashed at him made it worth it. “Saa, Yuuta, you are excited,” he murmured. “You hid it so well.”

Yuuta bit back a smile and smacked his brother upside the head. “Stupid Syuusuke. You were the one excited.” Maybe a day out with his siblings wouldn’t be so bad. In fact, he thought as he settled back into the seat, it might be more fun than he’d thought it would be.
