Pairing: KenKen/Shohei [Stand Up!]

Love Train

“Sho-chan, come here,” said Ken-Ken and Shohei obediently moved to stand beside his childhood friend, looking through the chain-link fence over the train tracks. A little farther down the way, Mazen and her friends were yelling out train names like Ken-Ken used to do, only with far more enthusiasm, leaving Tayo and Ko sitting on the swings looking rather lost, Ko with a soccer ball in his lap. Ken-Ken, Shohei suspected, was a little put out by how his hobby had been taken over, but right now his best friend looked slightly more distracted.

“Eh?” said Shohei, confused, when Ken-Ken put his hands on Shohei’s shoulders and turned him to face Ken-Ken.

“We’re at school,” Ken-Ken said, looking very serious, a crease between his brows. He stared into Shohei’s eyes as if imparting a deep secret, as if simply willing Shohei to understand his unspoken words.

Shohei made a face, still as lost as ever. “We’re at school,” he repeated. “Yeah.” They came here every weekday, for about ten months of the year. What about it?

“I can’t kiss you at school,” Ken-Ken elaborated and understanding dawned on Shohei’s face.

But—then—no. Wait. That was terrible! Shohei had a particular liking for Ken-Ken’s kisses. He’d grown accustomed to them over winter holidays and as he stared at Ken-Ken, appalled, memories flashed through his head of soft, warm kisses behind the shrine during New Year’s, and less soft, more urgent kisses while sprawled over Ken-Ken’s bed. No more of those? Not while at school?

Dismayed, Shohei’s mouth gaped open. “But I like kissing you,” he exclaimed, loud enough that Mazen stopped mid-sentence and turned to look at him. Shohei flushed and looked away. “Er, I, um…I mean…” His voice trailed off and he stared resolutely, embarrassedly, at the trains he could see beyond Ken-Ken’s shoulders.

“What are you all embarrassed about, Sho-chan?” Tayo hollered, kicking his legs back and forth on the swing. “We already knew that you’re in looove with Ken-Ken.”

“…eh…ie?” stammered Shohei.

“At least you’re getting some,” Tayo pouted and in the blink of an eye, a school skirt flew up as Mazen kicked him in the face, knocking him backwards off the swing to land with a thump on the ground. She gave him an annoyed look, hands on her hips.

“I told you,” she said fiercely, “I’m a good girl now. So stop trying to be so perverted!”

Tayo rubbed his head and mustered a wavering grin. “Eheh…I saw…panties…”

Ko rolled his eyes and spun the soccer ball in his hands as Mazen found it appropriate to give Tayo a vicious kick in the knee as well. Shohei sneaked glances at them over his shoulder and was generally torn between being awed at how Tayo could survive such violent attacks almost daily and a sort of resignation that his friends were so…well…weird. They didn’t change, did they, even though it’d been months since Che had left and they’d gotten “girlfriends.” Or, “boyfriends” as was the case with Shohei and Ken-Ken. It didn’t matter in the end—they were still virgins, all of them, and still watching trains and getting kicked and playing soccer.

Shohei grinned to himself. Yeah, they were still them. Still best friends. And that was something he was glad about. They were all so precious to him.

“Sho-chan, pay attention to me,” said Ken-Ken and Shohei looked at him. Especially, he thought, Ken-Ken. He precioused Ken-Ken the most, from his floppy hair to his serious eyes and the way his mouth was curving into a small smile now, making Shohei hate the fact that they were at school even more because he really just wanted to kiss those lips.

Ken-Ken slipped a hand around Shohei’s. “We can’t kiss,” he said, “but we can hold hands.” He answered Shohei’s startled look with a squeeze of his hand.

Oh, thought Shohei, a good alternative.
