Raenef has a very important question to ask Eclipse.

Yet Unsaid

Raenef shifts from foot to foot, uneasy and blushing, eyes darting up from the ground and back down again. He fidgets, fingers tangling with each other then untangling, then tucking loose blonde hair behind his ears.

“Um,” he hedges, flushed, as he sneaks another look at Eclipse before his eyes dart away. “Er…”

Eclipse watches this in bemusement, sitting behind a table piled high with scrolls. He has been working on castle management and budget (he thinks direly that they should just hire a finance agent and be done with it, and if the poor fool is idiotic enough to try to embezzle, well, he’d learn pretty quickly that one didn’t cheat a demon lord…well, unless one was another demon lord, but that was a different matter altogether) but is momentarily paused to watch his liege shuffle in embarrassment.

“Is there something you need, Master Raenef?” he asks again.

Still, his lord pouts and fidgets and refuses to look him in the eyes.

“I should warn you that this is not appropriate behavior for a demon lord,” Eclipse says, but his tone is soft.

There is another fleeting glimpse of verdant green, lush like leaves after spring rain, but Eclipse is concerned only with the cause for his master’s discomfort.

“I’m sorry,” Raenef apologizes, casting another look at the marble floor. “I was working on my lessons and then I finished and I thought about you and I thought about how you were always so nice to me and how you always came after me, and that made me think of seeing you in the South again, like when I first met you and you were all dark and striking against all that sun, and I’d never seen anyone like you before and I remembered your hair—“

He breaks off and flushes a deeper red.

Eclipse remains perplexed. He sets his quill down and shifts his position in the chair, turning so he faces his little master more directly. “Yes, Master Raenef?” he prompts.

Raenef sneaks another quick look.

Firmly, Eclipse captures the gaze with his own and they stare at each other for a long moment, silence strung awkwardly in the air like paintings hung sideways along the wall.

“What do you need, Raenef?” asks Eclipse quietly.

Another pause, and then Raenef looks earnestly at the dark-haired demon and blurts,

“Can I braid your hair?”

The silence is longer this time, long enough that Raenef is uncomfortable and resumes his fidgeting, blushing, and air of embarrassment.

At long last, a movement that can be classified as a suppressed twitch, a fleeting smirk, or the briefest of smiles, flits across Eclipse’s face. “Yes, Master Raenef,” he says, turning back to his work, “you may.”
