Turnabout

Shindou's cell phone rang to the perky tune of Morning Musume's newest single. He ignored Waya's snort of contempt—standard procedure by now—and fished his phone out of his pocket. Flipping it open, he said cheerfully,

"Shindou speaking. I'd like to order a large anchovy pizza, please."

"I—what—"

Oh, it was Touya. Gleefully, Shindou said, "Sorry, you must have the wrong number." He hung up and chortled at the disbelieving look he received from Waya. "I live to make Touya's life more surreal."

The older boy shook his head. "He's going to kill you," he muttered, returning to his fries. "That boy has no sense of humor."

"You'd be surprised," said Shindou as his cell phone belted out the lyrics to SEXY BOY again. He grinned as he answered. "Yo."

"SHINDOU!" Waya winced at the annoyed shout crystal-clear from across the booth. He tried not to eavesdrop, but not overhearing was difficult. "That was so immature. I can't believe you. You're not twelve anymore! What if I'd been calling for something important?"

"It was just a joke! Lighten up!" Shindou protested. He twirled his straw in his Coke, clattering the ice cubes against each other, returning Waya's pointed look with a "what can you do about it" shrug. Touya would always be Touya, and Touya was uptight. "What's up?"

"Oh!" Touya seemed to collect himself as he remembered the purpose of his call. "I just wanted to check if were still going to the hot springs this weekend because Go Weekly is trying to schedule an interview."

"Yeah, of course. We bought train tickets already."

"Okay. Oh, and Ogata-san wants to know if he can come with us. He says it's been forever since he's had a good massage."

Shindou's mouth fell open and his straw stilled. Waya shot him a questioning look that morphed into wary disbelief, both eyebrows raised, when he snapped, "Well, he can go get one in the city! There are plenty of places in Tokyo! He can go to one of those!"

There was a pause and a muffled sound, then Touya said, "He says he misses, um, communing with nature."

"…what is he, a monk? Tell him to go to a park!" People in the burger shop were beginning to give Shindou uneasy, sidelong looks, but he remained oblivious, glaring at his drink as if it personally offended him, his entire body language singing of irritation. Ogata Seiji was admittedly a very touchy subject with him.

"He wants to spend time with us?" Touya offered.

"NO. He sees you enough as it is! Is he there with you right now?"

"Er, Shindou," said Waya.

"Yes." Touya sounded very matter-of-fact and not at all like Ogata's presence was a terrible atrocity committed against Shindou's person. "We're having tea. What's wrong with you, Shindou?"

"There's nothing wrong with me," snapped Shindou, waving his free hand in the air wildly, gesturing. "I'm not the one inviting old men with questionable morals to the hot springs with me!"

There was a moment of silence where Shindou was half-afraid, under his own irritation, that he'd finally pissed Touya off, too. Then a chuckle sounded in his ear. "I'm not either," Touya said, sounding far too amused for Shindou's taste. "It was just a joke, Shindou. Lighten up!"

Shindou gaped as his words were thrown back in his face. "I. You. Touya," he spluttered.

"See you on Friday," Touya told him cheerfully.

Waya raised an eyebrow as Shindou put his cell phone down, still at a loss for words. When had Touya— How could he have— Shindou was such a terrible influence on him. The beginnings of a grin appeared on his face. Who would've guessed, thought Shindou in admiration.

"You're right," Waya said, smirking, "that's quite the sense of humor."

"Oh, shut up."
