永遠の途中
Eien no Tochuu
The Middle of Eternity

Michael runs a hand through his hair, wings rustling slightly. He’s slightly awkward in the modern, fully-functional kitchen, and looks out of place with his white robes, draped loosely over his body, large wings folded uncomfortably behind him. Searching for something to say, he recalls the church orphanage down the street. “So, have the kids been good?” he asks, earnest.

“They’ve been kids,” Azael replies with a smile as he leans over to pull an apple out of the refrigerator. He offers one to Michael who only shakes his head, bemused, as he watches Azael move easily in this new space, new world, that he’s not only adapted to, but has grown to cherish and love. His long silver hair is pulled back in a loose braid and his long body clad in casual human clothing. He looks entirely…mortal.

It discomfits Michael who will never be quite used to seeing one of his closest companions relegated to the mortal realm, to hell, from heaven. He shifts his stance, gaze flicking around the small kitchen as he wonders what else there is to say, and is drawn back to Azael when a crunch breaks loudly in their awkward silence; Azael has taken a bite of his apple.

“Lucifer and I have been fine,” Azael says softly, tongue flickering out to lap at a trail of juice on his lip. His golden eyes lock with the archangel’s. “Our Father has still been taking care of us.” Moving closer, he touches Michael’s shoulder gently with his free hand. “And so have our friends.”

Michael inclines his head in acknowledgment. “Could you have expected anything less?” he asks quietly. “Gabriel and I cannot forget the two of you.”

Azael gives him a level look. “Thank you.”

Between them passes an unspoken recognition of all the things they were, the things had gone through together, and the things they do for each other now and unto eternity. Bonds between the creations of the Lord--immortal love, as it were.

A rattle at the door and as Azael turns to look, Lucifer appears, black hair bound to show off two piercings in each ear, eyes charmed a pretty blue and Michael starts again, reminding Azael that he had yet to see Lucifer in his mortal guise.

Lucifer notices the archangel in their kitchen and grins. “Michael,” he greets him as he toes off his shoes and makes his way toward Azael. “What are you doing here?” His arms go around his lover and he presses a warm kiss, lips cool, to Azael’s cheek.

“Visiting,” Michael replies softly, watching them, and there is a look in his eyes again. His smile tilts upward, sincere, and then his wings rustle. “I’ll leave now.” He shakes his head as Azael begins to protest and promises, “I’ll be back soon. Perhaps Gabriel will accompany me next time.”

Then Lucifer is alone with Azael as the angel disappears, holy light winking out, indiscernible to a mortal eye.

“How was work?” Azael murmurs as he turns in Lucifer’s arms to face him.

“Busy,” is the reply as Lucifer nuzzles the other angel’s neck. “Everyone and their mother wanted coffee today, it seems.” He laps his tongue against Azael’s lips, swiping away the tang of apples. “Come with me tomorrow, shaibel.”

Azael shifts against him and raises his hands to pull the tie out of Lucifer’s hair, winding his fingers in the loose locks. “Maybe I will,” he replies with a smile and Lucifer kisses him again, tasting temptation and giving in to it.
