The New Generation
“2000 yen says Kyo’s going to win Tohru-chan’s heart,” Ayame declared, throwing down two thousand-yen bills. He grinned at the other two men at the table, flicking his long braid over his shoulder confidently.
Shigure made a shocked face, gasping loudly for sound effect. “Aya-chan,” he exclaimed, slapping his palms against his cheeks as he widened his eyes at Ayame. “You’re not even going to root for your own little brother? Oh tragedy, tragedy,” he mourned. “Poor Yuki! The loss of fraternal devotion these days…”
Ayame sniffed. “It’s because I know Yuki that I know he won’t win Tohru-chan over. His looks and charms will never reach my level! He is too reticent! The youngsters of today are really such a disappointment.” He sighed dramatically and then kicked Hatori lightly. “Right, Ha-kun?”
Hatori sighed and placed two bills of his own on top of Ayame’s. “2000 yen for Yuki,” he said quietly.
Two pairs of eyes turned toward him, surprised. “Do you really think that?” asked Ayame, startled out of his histrionics.
A smile tugged at Hatori’s mouth. “Well, what kind of bet would it be otherwise?”
“Oooh, Ha-kun’s devious,” Ayame exclaimed, golden eyes warming. He stared at Hatori through his lashes, leaning across the table toward him. “I like it when you make things interesting,” he purred, moving so his braid fell forward, over his shoulder, strands escaping the band at the end. The gleam in his eyes was reminiscent of the snake that he was, but Hatori didn’t back down.
“It’s never safe when you’re bored, Aya,” he returned, still smiling.
Shigure grinned from his seat beside Hatori, hiding it behind his sake cup. “You two have such...friction,” he said, trailing his free hand up Hatori’s arm and watching Ayame the entire while. When golden eyes flickered in his direction, he downed his sake and gave Ayame a challenging look as he set the cup back on the table. “5000 yen,” he said, pulling out a few bills from the pocket of his hakama, “that neither Kyo or Yuki will win Tohru-chan’s heart.”
Hatori raised his eyebrows and turned to glance at Shigure as well. “Who, then?”
In lieu of answering, Shigure leaned forward and met Ayame’s mouth with his own. He tugged the band off the braid and tangled his hands in long, white hair as his tongue flickered around Ayame’s, still aware of Hatori’s weighty gaze on the both of them. After a while, he pulled back slightly, still breathing heavily into Ayame’s mouth, a slender hand still fisted in his own hair.
“I don’t know,” he told Hatori cheekily, winking. “But only yesterday, Kyo-kun was busying himself like I was just now. Doesn’t say much for him wanting to woo Tohru-chan, does it?”
Hatori’s look turned speculative, but not entirely surprised. Ayame, however, shouted, “Oh my God, my little brother’s gay?” and jerked back, forgetting that he still had a hold of Shigure’s hair, much to the dog’s dismay. Shigure, however was mollified by the fact that he was sure to win the 4000 yen once he pulled out the photographs he’d taken clandestinely while the two subjects had been distracted. It paid to be sneaky sometimes.
