A LITTLE STRESS RELIEF

/ chapter 3 kuruwasete /
“Oi, nezumi.” Kyo halted, unnerved for a moment by those violet eyes that raised to meet him head-on, shimmering in the unnatural lights of the classroom yet still managing to be shadowed with unknown emotions and yes, he realized that was a contradiction but the damn rat managed to carry it off anyway and that’s what made those eyes so intriguing—
Kyo stopped himself and went back over that incoherent thought. He did not just think that…
Yuki, about to enter classroom 2-D on Tohru’s heels, lost his patience with standing in the doorway waiting for his cousin to speak. “What do you want?” he snapped, narrowing those enigmatic eyes—Kyo had to refrain from snarling out loud at himself—and tapped a foot. “Well?”
Jerking his thoughts back on their proper track, the flame-haired teen said abruptly, “How didja know Gravitation Remix was yaoi?”
There was a long pause, during which Kyo was belatedly grateful that there was no one around close enough to overhear their conversation. He felt his face heat. It really wasn’t the sort of topic one should be discussing in school, especially with all those crazy girls around; y’know the ones that ran around after him and Yuki with their sparkly eyes and flushed faces and breathless questions. At least his stalkers didn’t break out into random dances…the cat felt a moment’s pity for his cousin. He was drawn out of his thoughts when said cousin laughed.
Wait, Yuki…laughing?
He didn’t know to be surprised or affronted. So he went with what he knew. “What’s so damn funny?” he snarled, clenching his fists.
Yuki continued laughing, genuinely, hand on the doorframe and doubled over slightly, his hair falling into his eyes. Kyo stared. He’d never seen his cousin laugh…like that… The action attracted quite a few stares from nearby students also; Souma Yuki, the cool, collected Prince Charming, was laughing! What on earth…? Their curiosity was blatant even from afar.
Ignoring the wide-eyed looks and his cousin’s growing ire, the silver-haired Souma finally got a hold of himself. He straightened. “It took you three months to come up with that,” he chuckled, eyeing Kyo with amusement. “I had a bet going on with myself over how long it’d take you to realize…” He stifled another snicker. Finally schooling his features into a mild smile, he turned toward the classroom again. As he walked in, leaving his cousin gaping after him in the hall, he added, “You took thirteen days longer that I’d guessed. You should really speed it up, nekozuki.” [2]
--
He knew the cat would seek him out at the earliest opportunity, which happened to be their ten o’clock break. Yuki considered deliberately eluding his cousin by slipping out of the room and finding a member of the student council to engage in an asinine conversation about “important school matters.” In the end, though, he put off evading the redhead and sat at his desk, flipping through his textbooks idly, ignoring the advances of his fellow classmates and waiting for his cousin to approach him.
“Yuki-kun!”
“A-ano…Souma-kun…”
“Yuki.” Yuki looked up. Ah, there it was. That demanding, belligerent tone. Kyo stood by the door (it’d taken him close to five minutes to free himself from the mad rush of students—both male and female—that’d attacked Yuki’s desk and his by default), arms crossed, and glaring as usual. “I need to talk to you outside.”
Yuki would’ve laughed at the cheesy line and the looks on his classmate’s faces, but he’d used up his quota today. Still, he allowed himself a private smirk. “Excuse me,” he said politely as he extricated himself from his seat and made his way toward Kyo. As he passed Tohru and her friends, she gave him a concerned look. Instantly, he felt a pang of guilt at making her worry, so he gave her a reassuring smile. She returned it with a relieved, blinding smile of her own.
He sighed and continued towards the door. He hated seeing her upset, and he hated especially making her upset. She was such a kind person, loving them all in spite of their faults, so selflessly. He rather doubted they deserved her kindness, but it was a blessing nonetheless; his expression softened at the thought of her. Yuki stepped out into the hallway. “A-ah,” he started, surprised, when Kyo yanked him down the hall and around a corner into an empty corridor.
“Alright, you kuso nezumi, I want to know how you knew.” He was all no-nonsense now, arms crossed and eyes narrowed.
Yuki smiled beatifically at him, paused dramatically, and said in a mild but very definite voice, “No.”
“What? Why not?! Tell me right now!” The cat was fast losing his cool, voice rising.
“Why should I?”
“Because I said so! I want to know!”
“…”
“Tell me! Damn rat!”
The violet-eyed boy pressed a finger to the other boy’s lips, quieting him. Kyo stopped talking abruptly, staring wide-eyed at his cousin. A slim brow was raised. “You know I receive gifts and love letters and flowers every day, right?”
The cat made an unflattering sound under his breath. Yuki glared at him and idly trailed his finger to the corner of Kyo’s mouth. “Don’t say a word, baka neko, it’s not as if I ask for them.” He rolled his eyes. “They just throw them at me…” His nail caught briefly on the cat’s lower lip and he had a sudden, unexplainable urge to run his tongue over that rosy skin, lapping gently at its unexpected softness and warmth. Yuki blinked. What was that? He must be more stressed than he’d realized, surprising considering his relief yesterday…
“I receive gifts and trinkets from both sexes,” Yuki said abruptly, removing his finger and tucking it away safely as he crossed his arms in a defensive gesture. Defensive against what he wasn’t quite sure… “And one of the ways the males seek to persuade me into a relationship is to make sure I have good exposure to the yaoi world—through manga, if necessary. And I’ve received Gravitation Remix along with Yami no Matsuei, Bronze, FAKE, and Ai no Kusabi, among other things. That’s how I knew.”
Kyo was staring at him, his mouth parted slightly in…Yuki didn’t know what. Amazement? Shock? Disgust?
“I suppose that answers your question baka neko.” Turning quickly on his heel, Yuki set a brisk pace back toward the classroom. He didn’t want to deal with the cat anymore.
Prince Charming was quite unaware that he had left his cousin wondering just what was wrong with him.
--
Over the next couple of days, Kyo pried his strange pondering away from Yuki (strange not in that he was thinking of his cousin, because he did that all the time, but odd in what he was thinking—why did he care what was wrong with Yuki?) and focused on Tohru’s surprise birthday party instead. He, according to Shigure’s “Master Plan”, was responsible for decorating the house and coming up with games to play. He found the most efficient way of accomplishing his tasks was to foist them onto a more willing Souma. Momiji, beaming, promised the decorations would be perfect. Kyo was somewhat doubtful but he thought it’d be safer than asking Hanajima and Uo—he still remembered their downstairs bathroom after that cleaning fiasco. [3] (They hadn’t been able to use it for days! Not until Ayame had come around to exclaim at the fabric and promptly remove it to be used in his shop anyway.) As for games, Hatsuharu assured Kyo that he’d take care of them, surprisingly not challenging the cat to a fight over it. Guess everyone wanted to do something nice for Tohru’s birthday…though Kyo personally wouldn’t have minded a fight; it would’ve gotten his mind back on track and away from its unnerving travels.
With his duties taken care of, Kyo realized he still had one very important task left—buying the girl a gift! The afternoon [of the day] before Tohru’s birthday he tore through the town’s shops, looking for an appropriate present, cursing under his breath he entire time. The kuso nezumi had probably bought his gift already, perfect as he was and his gift was probably perfect too! He growled in annoyance. What the hell was he going to buy? After two hours of being harassed by store owners and clerks, Kyo finally settled on a gift, glaring and muttering uncomplimentary things at the poor college student ringing up the sale. The redhead snatched his purchase bag and stormed home. Why was shopping so stressful?
--
Yuki had finished placing food orders to a nearby restaurant the day before, which was lucky because Tohru didn’t have work today and had spent the afternoon getting his help with her studies. She’d work tomorrow though, which would give them time to set up and surprise her—Yuki’d also had the foresight to arrange her leaving work earlier with her boss so she could enjoy her party. But that would all come tomorrow. Tohru was currently inside the house preparing dinner and the pale-haired Souma was out in his garden, weeding.
He pulled up another bothersome weed and laid it in the neat pile beside him, pausing to push his bangs out of his eyes with his arm. He halted briefly when he noticed a fuming figure stomp towards him. The cats trailing after it left little question as to what it could be, clearly that baka cousin of his…
Yuki watched the late afternoon sunlight highlight Kyo’s red hair, painting it with a fiery, almost ethereal, glow. It made the boy look like he was actually burning with the abundant energy that so often manifested itself in his actions and words. Yuki blinked. What was wrong with him lately—where were all these strange thoughts coming from? He could hardly deny that he found Kyo beautiful, of course; it was, after all, a factor in their strange…relationship. Partnership. Agreement? But still…
His train of thought derailed when the Souma in question stalked over to him, one hand clenched tight around a shopping back. The other, however, lifted to grasp Yuki’s chin. Before the rat could do anything but blink in surprise, the cats mouth was on his—hard, fast, and demanding. It was one of their rougher kisses, though they were hardly gentle to begin with, all about dominance, relief, and the need to lose oneself in the ardor of passion. And hot. Like electricity tripping along his skin. Like it always was.
Kyo pulled back after a while, breathing hard, staring at the boy kneeling on the ground. His vermilion eyes narrowed and he scowled, growling something unintelligible under his breath. As he whirled on his heel and marched back into the house, a breathless Yuki caught a couple of curse words and something about “sadistic shoppers.”
He stared after his irascible cousin, heart still pounding. What had brought all that about? All that stress… Stress so frustrating, so explosive, that it had culminated and demanded instant gratification… Yuki ran his tongue over his swollen lips, still tingling from where Kyo had brought his teeth into play. A slight flush stained his cheeks. He’d have to wait awhile before going back in.
As he returned his attention to his garden, he hoped the baka neko had thought to avoid Tohru when he stormed into the house. Although it’d certainly be interesting to see what kind of responses he’d come up with in face of the girl’s well-meaning concern over his appearance. Yuki chuckled to himself and pulled out another weed.
