Theme: Christmas fluff
Winter Story
Sakura tripped into her room, color high in her cheeks and slippers pattering against the floor. “My scarf!” she exclaimed. “My mittens!” Tearing through the room, she wrestled the needed articles of clothing from where they’d been hanging neatly in her closet and struggled to put them on. Her eyes were bright, her smile both excited and nervous. “My bag!” she added, spinning around and darting her gaze from one end of her room to the other. “Kero, have you seen my bag?”
The golden stuffed animal look-a-like swished his tail at her. “It’s at the foot of your bed,” he said and eyed her curiously. “What’s got you in such a frenzy?”
“I’m meeting Li-kun in the park in ten minutes!” Sakura chirped, beaming even as her cheeks pinked more.
Kero smirked. “So that’s it.” He turned a flip midair and then pulled up short, giving her a horrified look. “The brat? What are you doing with him?”
“I’m going to give him his Christmas present,” replied Sakura, tugging on her hat, warm and green and knit for her by Tomoyo. She frowned at Kero as she picked up her bag and unzipped it to put Syaoran’s carefully wrapped present in it. “And don’t call him that!” Zipping up her bag again, she slipped the straps over her shoulder and then dashed out the room, waving a mitten-covered hand in Kero’s direction. “Be good!” she called and then all Kero heard was her hurried clatter down the steps.
“Hmph,” Kero said, crossing his chubby little arms. “She could do better than that.”
But Sakura didn’t think so fifteen minutes later when she shyly handed Syaoran her gaily-wrapped present, braving her anxiety with her best smile. And when Li-kun, face red, thrust his present at her without meeting her eyes… Sakura felt her heart squeeze and it was a fluttery, wonderful sensation; it was a pleasant feeling different from when she’d been so afraid for Touya or from when she’d been chasing down her wayward cards. The flicker of excitement that accompanied it was far lovelier, warm in the pit of her stomach.
“Thank you, Li-kun,” she said sweetly, taking the package carefully and eyes glowing at the seasonal green ribbon tied with a flourish. She wanted so badly to open it now—but she was also savoring the anticipation. Shivering a little in the cold air, she glanced over at Syaoran, beside her on the park bench. “I hope you like it,” she added hastily, suddenly nervous again as he stared at the package in his hands.
His eyes flashed up to meet hers. “Uh, yeah,” he stammered. “I’m sure I’ll love it!”
“I know I’ll like whatever Li-kun gave me,” she continued warmly, slightly embarrassed but still smiling. “Because you put your heart into choosing it just for me.”
He flushed. “Y-yeah. Same for yours.” He hesitated for a moment, looking as if he was struggling with himself, but finally, tentatively, he reached a gloved hand out for hers. He grasped her hand gently and slid her a sideways, assessing look, which she answered by ducking her head, hair falling to cover her face, and squeezing his hand. Her heart was doing that fluttery thing again, she noted happily.
“Merry Christmas,” Syaoran said to her, softly, and smiled.
