Endless Moment
The night was cooler than Miki had expected and she shivered in her thin jacket, stepping up her pace a little. The faster she walked, the sooner she would be home, where it was warm and bustling and cheerful. Coming home for New Year’s was always a treat, she thought with a smile, rubbing her gloved hands together. Especially because she got to spend more time with Yuu. The thought of her boyfriend made her smile. They went to the same university now but they were each busy with their classes, and even though they made time to spend with each other, it was never quite as much time as Miki would have liked.
That would be rectified over this break, hopefully. Miki’s hop-skipped happily and turned the corner, her heart warming when she saw her house brightly lit. Her parents—all four of them—were no doubt crammed in the kitchen, bumping elbows and laughing as they made dinner. Yuu would be watching TV or reading a book, somewhere near their crazy parents because even though he didn’t say much about it, Miki knew he missed them too when they were at school.
As she hurried down the sidewalk, swinging her purse, Miki reflected that her home and Meiko’s weren’t really all that different. Certainly her house had more people; Meiko only had Namura-sensei (Miki found it difficult to refer to him by any other name, even after all this time) and their apartment was small, suitable for just the two of them. But in terms of warmth and happiness—well, Miki had just seen the glow on her best friend’s face. It made her smile too. She was glad that Meiko was able to be so happy, after everything she’d gone through.
Though, she supposed, Meiko and Namura-sensei’s domestic bliss was slightly…more peaceful than that of the Koishikawa-Matsuura household. Her family had a tendency toward the chaotic, Miki thought with a resigned sigh as she tripped up the steps to her front door.
Letting herself in, she called out, “I’m home!” She shivered as she closed the door behind her. Ahh, heat. Toeing off her shoes, she made her way to the living room area, hearing pots and pans banging around in the kitchen, as she’d suspected earlier.
“Miki.” Yuu had gotten to his feet and was coming her way, crutch under his left arm and smile on his face. “How were Meiko and Namura?”
Miki frowned. “Yuu! Sit down!” She pulled him back over to the couches and tugged him down until he was sitting. “Don’t strain yourself,” she told him severely. Then she grinned at his expression, knowing he was about going to protest again that it was a just a sprain, he’d been careless, it wasn’t that big of a deal— “Meiko was doing well,” she said before he could open his mouth. “You’ll have to come see her with me before the holiday’s over, okay?”
Yuu smiled as she leaned into him. He slipped an arm around her shoulders. “Sounds good,” he replied, dropping a kiss to the top of her head.
Miki closed her eyes happily and they stayed that way for a while, sitting on the couch without saying anything, just being close to each other. Until, that was, the clamor rose from their parents to get over to the table, they were going to eat dinner now!
