Ready, Steady, Go
Hikaru no Go, PG, AkiHika, 734 words
An afternoon in which Touya is not particularly ready.

For my lovely [livejournal.com profile] aisutenshi's 17th birthday! A little AkiHika with reluctant cuddling, go!

Ready, Steady, Go

“Shindou!” Touya hissed, looking panicked, “What the hell are you doing?”

Shindou looked down at the apparent cause of Touya’s great distress. “What’s the matter with you?” he whispered back, bemused. He held up their interlinked hands and Touya flushed, eyes casting about wildly for potential witnesses. “Is it ‘cause I’m holding your hand?”

Shindou!” Touya said again, hair sticking to his cheek as he ducked his head and glared at the other boy, “people will see. We’re in public, you idiotic excuse for a go strategist!” His face was still red as he hunched his shoulders as if hoping his bulky winter coat would hide his embarrassment from the world or, at the very least, swallow him whole. The sharp, cold air of winter at least would excuse the flush in his cheeks. As for why he and Shindou were sitting so close together, well, it was obviously because Shindou was weak and needed body heat and—and—if anyone questioned them, he’d throw Shindou’s cup of hot chocolate at them! It wasn’t any of their business anyway!

That still wouldn’t explain why they were holding hands, though, Touya thought frantically. He forgot his objective to hide his face—maybe if people didn’t recognize him, it wouldn’t matter if they saw him—long enough to sneak a glance at Shindou, who was looking remarkably unperturbed, glancing off into the distance and sipping at his drink and still holding Touya’s left hand in his right.

Touya opened his mouth, outraged, when Shindou said, “You shouldn’t worry so much, Touya. There’s no one in the park anyway.” He grinned and Touya swallowed his words, hard, because there was something irresistible about the way Shindou smiled, always too free and boyish for someone of his age, jarring to Touya who’d spent a lifetime with adults three or four times his age. The smile always twisted something warm low in Touya’s stomach, but it was a nice feeling, he thought, after he’d gotten used to it.

Shindou was blowing across the top of his hot chocolate in an attempt to cool it faster, his lips pursed. His bangs, still blond but fading, swung across his eyes with each breath. Touya watched him, almost entranced, and gradually relaxed with each burst of warm-cool air skimming across the surface of the hot chocolate. His arms laid lax by his sides, left hand resting limply in Shindou’s, which he noted somewhere in the back of his mind was dry and warm, fingers rough with go calluses.

“You know, it’s really creepy when you stare at me that way,” Shindou said after a few minutes, lips pressed against the rim of his styrofoam cup and eyes sliding warily over towards Touya.

Touya tensed again. “I can’t help it,” he said defensively. “You were, you know—“ His right hand raised to gesture at Shindou and then the cup.

“I was what?”

“You were— The cup was— Drinking,” Touya sputtered at last. He looked morally offended.

Shindou stared at him and then shook his head with a sigh. “You’re really weird, you know that, Touya?”

Excuse me?” said Touya, glaring at the other boy. “I’m not the one who likes ramen—but only on a schedule. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, was it?” He made an indignant sound. “Or the one who likes green tea ice cream. Or the one with half-bleached bangs and an earring!”

“Maybe I should re-dye my bangs,” Shindou said thoughtfully, rolling his eyes up to stare at his hair. Then he looked over at Touya. “Oi! Green tea ice cream is good,” he argued. “I don’t know why you think it’s so weird, Touya! You haven’t even tried it!”

“Green tea belongs in cups,” Touya said primly, “and I’d thank it to stay there.”

Shindou bent at the waist, leaning over his legs, and laughed. The tail end of his scarf came untucked and fell over his shoulder, dangling perilously close to his half-finished drink. Touya watched in bemusement as Shindou laughed so hard that he shook under his winter jacket, sound bright and infectious in the late morning sunlight. He wanted to say something but he hesitated. Sometimes, with Shindou, he felt that words were unneeded. Sometimes it was just about the feeling, like Shindou was always telling him.

Tentatively, he smiled and squeezed Shindou’s hand.

“You are,” said Shindou between chuckles, “so weird, Touya.”
