Siwon and Hankyung are best friends for a lot of reasons they’ve never bothered to list, and they talk to each other about a lot of things they don’t bother to categorize. The late-night conversations can go from girls to tentative hopes for the future to favorite movies, and Hankyung knows he’s told Siwon more than he’s told anyone else. But there is one thing Hankyung has never mentioned Siwon, even though he knows exactly how he would say it, even though he suspects the other man already knows—Hankyung says nothing because he doesn’t have the right.
Sometimes when they lie there in the dark, fallen silent after talking about one thing or the other, Hankyung will see in his mind the way Siwon smiles at Donghae and the way his laughter is always a little brighter. He’ll remember the way Siwon pulled Donghae into a hug earlier that day, the way his arm is constantly draped over Donghae’s arm, as if by unconscious default. He’ll sigh a little, a silent exhalation, as he recalls the way Siwon’s teasing is always a little harder, a little more mischievous, with Donghae than with anyone else, and the expression in his eyes when he watches Donghae from across the room.
Hankyung knows Siwon well enough to suspect that Siwon is more than aware of his feelings, but Hankyung knows Siwon well enough not to ask. He doesn’t have to.
Sometimes Hankyung wants to ask other questions, though, like, why him? Not out of jealousy or of spite, but sincere curiosity. Other times, Hankyung watches Donghae and he thinks that he understands.
The hardest thing not to ask, however, is does he know?
But then Hankyung thinks to himself, no, because then things would be different, Donghae would be different, Siwon would be different. If he knew, there would be less watching, less wistfulness, less of this pressing silence that stretches between Hankyung and his best friend. They would be able to talk about everything, if Donghae knew.
But Donghae doesn’t know, so Hankyung doesn’t ask, because Siwon and Hankyung are best friends for a lot of reasons, and one of those reasons is because Hankyung trusts Siwon to know when it is time to break the silence. It’s not his place to speak out, but to wait for when it will happen.
If it will ever happen.
